The Sanctuary Panels

All Saints’ Church, Princeton, NJ

In September 2017, Makoto Fujimura revealed a set of four-panel pieces, a gift to the recently completed sanctuary of All Saints’. They echo a long-standing ecclesiastical tradition which changes the colors of altar hangings and vestments in accordance with the seasons of the Christian year — but with a measure of flexibility.

There are 16 panels in all — 4 sets of 4 — and their distinctive style captures elements of the traditional colors for Advent, Easter, Pentecost, and Trinity while exploiting the changing light that pours into the sanctuary from the great east window. At certain times, the position of the panels is altered slightly, to mark seasonal changes with subtlety.
